Samsung 85-inch 4K Easel TV, UN85S9 (Best Of CES 2013)

Samsung 85-inch 4K Easel TV, UN85S9

Samsung announced a 85-inch ultra high definition 4K TV, the largest!  Samsung is coming out with this TV in march 2013.One of the key differences of this TV is that it has a full array backlight around the back, which means it doesn’t have the edge-lit display. Samsung will also include the local dimming on this set so this combined with the back-lit display will improve the picture quality.

The S9 series will also give you the latest Samsung Smart Hub and employs improved gesture controls and a voice-control remote. Possibly one of the more notable innovations is the introduction of the One Connect system, which consolidates all audio/visual cables into one solitary cable that plugs into the back of the TV, getting rid of the frustrating rat's nest of HDMI cables

The TV set has a very unique design, Samsung calls it “Timeless” since around the edge is a very thin bezel and the entire screen sits among a larger frame. The entire screen is built into a sort of external easel. You can actually move the set up and down on the frame or you can even tilt horizontally as well. There is also a camera hidden along the top of the screen, which is used for skype and gesture control. Voice-recognition is another feature on this TV, which allows you to speak to the TV. There is also a new touch pad remote with a microphone included just like the Samsung high-end smart TVs. The 4K Easel UN 85S9 is undoubtedly the most fully loaded television, there is even speakers on the outside bezel, which act like a sound bar. The UN85S9 is expected to sell for a hefty price tag of $30,000!

Samsung UN85S9 TV Specs:
  • 85-inch 4K Ultra HD Display (3840 × 2160px)
  • 1.35GHz processor with the Quad-Core A15 chipset.
  • 4 HDMI ports
  • 120-watt 2.2 speaker system
  • Smart Hub software, S-Recommendation, and voice control
While there isn't much 4K content out yet, Samsung installed an onboard system to upscale non-4K content to fit the screen. This will allow you to enjoy the TV's amazing picture quality while the media rushes to create content in the newer resolution standard.

Samsung Galaxy Skin (Best Of CES 2013)

Samsung Galaxy Skin

Technology changes every two years. Just comparing the iPhone 4 that was released the June of 2010 and the iPhone 3G from 2008; the difference is so major that even seeing the 3G reminds someone of the ‘old days.’ Blackberry has been around since 1999, but their Curve series that began in 2007 changed greatly within two years. RIM was getting rid of the little white touch balls and replacing them with black touch pads. Then, of course, there’s Android. The Captivate came out in 2010 which is pretty much the first generation of Galaxy devices and not everyone would recognize it if they saw it. In 2012, they came out with the Galaxy S III, in which one out of every nine people buying a smart phone chose the S III for its display size and updated software.

Think a flexible smartphone is just science fiction? You might have to think again, thanks to Samsung. The Korean company recently unveiled Galaxy Skin, an Android smartphone that can take on different shapes and take on even hammer blows, set to begin production in 2013 Q2 with murmurings of a release sometime thereafter.

Samsung Galaxy skin 1

At this year’s CES in Las Vegas, Samsung revealed a new, flexible AMOLED screen that portrays vivid images on a flat, bendable display. These screens also happen to be very energy efficient and unbreakable – quite the feat! , they look amazing, an almost Daliesque, surrealistic view of our phoning future.

Samsung Galaxy skin

This fantasy phone can be shaped into the form of a boombox or projector. Or perhaps you’d rather a stand-alone clock for a phone. With a bendable AMOLED display, the possibilities are endless.
Samsung Galaxy skin 2

After flexible-screen mobile phones roll out, the company plans to introduce the same technology for tablets and other devices.

Samsung Flexible AMOLED DisplaySamsung Galaxy Skin was just a kind of rumors, but the flexible smartphone arrives sometime next year.
Using the material ‘graphene’ for its display, this has been touted to be “the miracle material” which will make flexible displays a reality by the time the Skin hits the market.
This polyimide substrate will replace the glass. It is soft enough to be rollable and bendable without making any damage to image quality.
The display will have double the length when unfolded.

Specs:

-221mm x 67mm x 8 mm
-16GB and 32GB
-4" 800x480 flexible AMOLED
-8 MP camera + VGA camera
-1.2Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM
-1500mAh battery

TACTUS TECHNOLOGY (Best Of CES 2013)

TACTUS  TECHNOLOGY

The Future is here.Just press a button and this tablet's screen sprouts real tactile buttons that push out of the screen and give you a true physical keyboard that you can press and feel.Works with a  pumping system and is nothing short of magic.

Tactus Technology is the developer of a new tactile user interface for touch-screen devices. Tactus provides a new dimension of user interface with a fundamentally unique solution: application-controlled, completely transparent physical buttons that rise up from the touch-screen surface on demand. With the buttons enabled, users can push and type or rest their fingers as they would with any physical button or keyboard. When the buttons are disabled, they recede into the screen, becoming invisible and leaving a smooth, seamless flat touch-screen with maximum viewing area.

To emphasize, this is not a trick of your senses using vibration or stimulation, but rather real physical buttons that rise out of the surface of the screen. You can read more about the technology and how it works "Taking Touch Screen Interfaces Into A New Dimension".

Our Tactile Layer™ technology easily integrates with today's touchscreen-based devices (smart phones, tablets, personal navigation systems, gaming devices, etc.) by simply replacing the front layer of the display stack, known as the "lens", "window" or "cover glass". Our dynamic Tactile Layer component is the same thickness as the layer it replaces and requires no change to the underlying display or touch sensor.

Tactile Layer™ touchscreen features:
  • Replaces window and sits on top of the existing touch screen
  • Works with existing touch sensing and display technologies
  • Minimal power consumption
  • Size is scalable (mobile-phone screen to TV screen)
  • Button layouts, shapes, location and sizes can be customized

iPad mini review

Introduction

Apple has gone where we never thought it would, with the iPad mini bringing the Apple tablet experience to a brave new budget world.

The new tablet comes in at a wallet-friendly £279 for the basic version, with 16GB of storage on offer for the Wi-Fi version. You can supplement the mini-slate with up to 64GB of space to chuck movies and music, as well as 4G LTE connectivity, but that will set you back an eye-watering £529 for the top model.

Apple fans need not worry too much when it comes to whether the iPad mini is a worthy addition to the iBrand, as it comes with enough power and reams of Ive-inspired design to make it a worthwhile addition to the range – this isn't a shrunken down iPad, it's a whole new product again.
Be it the larger screen size, the impressively low weight or the alternative design compared to the competition there's a lot to chew over with the iPad mini – but is it worth spending your hard-earned when more cash will get you a fully-fledged version of Apple's tablet?

 Design

As with virtually all Apple devices, the iPad mini is an undeniable beauty, combining sleek, seamless edges, a stunning brushed metal back and strong build quality that is unrivalled by anything else on the 7-inch tablet market.

To that end, the screen is larger at 7.9 inches, the design is completely different to the likes of the new iPad or the Google Nexus 7, and the whole ethos has been created from the ground up partly under the stewardship of Sir Jony Ive, according to Apple.

The aluminium chassis shares the same colouring as the iPhone 5, with the darker black slate and white silver options both bringing a touch of class to proceedings.

At 308g it's twice the weight and then some of the iPhone 5, but compared to other tablets on the market (and combined with the aluminium chassis) it gives a very lightweight feeling the hand.
The screen is something of a worry though – with the 1024 x 768 resolution in the expansive display we're only getting a sharpness akin to the iPhone 3GS. While the display is better than that, thanks to improved IPS LCD technology, its still light years behind the Retina display on the bigger brother new iPad.

Interface and performance

I Pad mini is powered by the dual-core A5 chip, which powers iPad 2 and the fifth generation iPod touch and not iPad 3′s A5X chip or iPad 4′s A6X chip.

Camera:
iPad mini comes with front and back facing camera. The back-facing iSight camera is a 5-megapixel camera and the front-facing FaceTime camera is an HD camera, which will allow users to take 1.2-megapixel photos and record 720p HD videos.

Battery Life:
iPad mini comes with the same battery life as the full-sized iPad, which is amazing. It offers up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music.

Ultrafast Wireless:
Apple iPad miniiPad mini will also support 4G LTE networks around the world. It also supports HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. It can also connect to Wi-Fi networks on 2.4ghz and 5ghz on 802.11n.

Lightning Connector:
ipad mini reviewAs expected, iPad mini comes with Apple’s new Lightning connector like the iPhone 5, 5th generation iPod touch and 7th generation iPod nano.

Music:

Music is also well-placed on the iPad mini, with a simple to use interface and a much better price range for new songs should you want to keep up to date with the latest and greatest of the hit parade.

The sound quality through headphones is, as ever, excellent, although when playing it through the speakers the fact they're chucked down one end of the device does mean the sound quality isn't as good, especially if it's placed with the connector facing downwards (obviously).

Overall though, especially with wireless headphones, the iPad mini is great for tunes, in terms of being able to choose new songs through the store from the Music app to high-res album art playing on the lock screen - as well as the aforementioned widget controls it gets from the multitasking menu.

PROS

We liked a lot. A whole lot on the new iPad mini, and although the price is a little high . Apple has just about justified it with the way the device sits in the hand.
The larger screen might not fit fully in a single palm, but from the smooth back to the Smart Covers designed specifically for the model, we're fans - pure and simple.
The speed of the processor is perfectly acceptable and lag-free for all tasks, the UI is actually better-engineered for this 7.9-inch screen compared to its bigger brother and we're chirpy indeed about the battery prowess through harder use.

CONS

The lack of a Retina display is so, so frustrating as that's the killer feature (along with, perhaps, a slightly faster processor) that would have meant we gave the iPad mini our first five star tablet review. It's that good. But the screen is too fuzzy at times compared to the likes of the new iPad or iPhone 5 to consider it a dazzling display, and that's a real shame.
The low-power GPU is going to be an issue for some, even for the price point - although that's more for future proofing as in our tests the iPad mini performed as well as the quad core variants.
And while we've long given up on looking for expandable storage or a removable battery on these devices, 16GB of storage isn't enough for the plethora of large apps and HD content we're interested in downloading onto this device.

 Verdict

Certainly the most desirable 7-inch tablet on the market, the iPad mini’s £269 starting price is considerably higher than the competition but for that outlay you get a device that, although not specs superior, is a far more enticing option than much of what is already on the market.

Combining a brushed aluminium back with seamlessly curved edges and a fascia that will be familiar to full-sized iPad owners, the iPad mini is a device that looks and feels every penny that you pay for it. A step on from the plastic backed likes of the Google Nexus 7, the iPad mini is unrivalled in terms of build quality and style.

More than a simple piece of eye candy, however, the iPad mini is a joy to use and one which, thanks to its slightly larger 7.9-inch display is immersive and perfectly sized for a combination of business and pleasure purposes. If you have recently splashed out on a full-sized iPad 3 or iPad 4 then this might not be for you. If, however, you are looking to make the plunge into the tablet market for the first time and can live without an HD display, it’s hard to look past the new iPad mini.

Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser

AppTag Laser Blaster brings first person shooter console gameplay to smartphones in the real world.
Shoot Your Friends, in Augmented Reality, With Hex3's AppTag Laser Blaster.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51s7Yb-6fOL.jpg
As with any blaster toy, the object is to shoot your friends, but AppTag adds a whole new dimension! The free AppTag Apps keep score via WiFi and players can pick up Augmented Reality Weapons, ammo packs, health Kits, and body armour in a similar way to a console game like Halo™, but this is real life, inside or outdoors!
You can play single, multi or team games and AppTag can be used with other guns that have an accessory rail, such as Nerf™, BuzzBee™, etc.
For targeting, AppTag uses a focused infrared beam and sensor for the 'laser' so it's totally safe. Each unit has an IR sender and receiver, and the AppTag unit works together with any attached smart device with a camera.
Available in both iOS and Android Apps.
Hex3 AppTag Augemented Reality Laser Blaster

Nerf's doing it, and so is Hasbro, but there's plenty of room for other folks in the laser tag market, and Hex3 is a startup looking to get in on the action.

AppTagWhere AppTag differs is in how the pistol communicates with your phone. It uses a proprietary high frequency audio signal that requires no pairing or other similar procedures -- you simply load up the app, clamp it to the gun and you're good to go. Additionally, AppTag's removable pistol grip is attached to the gun via a rail mount. That means the system can be attached to existing Nerf weapons and even real firearms should you be so inclined, plus there's a corded pressure switch that you can affix to the trigger of any gun.

AppTag

The AppTag Release Date & Price

Shipping for the Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster is estimated to begin in about 4-6 weeks. Currently, you can pre-order the AppTag for $59.99 via the official website.
At launch, the AppTag will include a handful of compatible apps and games, but the encouraging news is that Hex3 is also releasing an SDK so that developers can create their own apps for use with the included gun holster. The AppTag gun holster that is included in the bundle is outfitted with four buttons, a trigger and a reload switch.
It shouldn’t be too long before you’re running and gunning in the wild. Forget those pesky darts that always seem to get lost. The AppTag seems like an awesome way to experience augmented reality in the real world. Plus, the option to shoot your friends doesn’t hurt either. We all have our moments.
