Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser

As with any blaster toy, the object is to shoot your friends, but AppTag adds a whole new dimension! The free AppTag Apps keep score via WiFi and players can pick up Augmented Reality Weapons, ammo packs, health Kits, and body armour in a similar way to a console game like Halo™, but this is real life, inside or outdoors!
You can play single, multi or team games and AppTag can be used with other guns that have an accessory rail, such as Nerf™, BuzzBee™, etc.
For targeting, AppTag uses a focused infrared beam and sensor for the 'laser' so it's totally safe. Each unit has an IR sender and receiver, and the AppTag unit works together with any attached smart device with a camera.

Nerf's doing it, and so is Hasbro, but there's plenty of room for other folks in the laser tag market, and Hex3 is a startup looking to get in on the action.

Where AppTag differs is in how the pistol communicates with your phone. It uses a proprietary high frequency audio signal that requires no pairing or other similar procedures -- you simply load up the app, clamp it to the gun and you're good to go. Additionally, AppTag's removable pistol grip is attached to the gun via a rail mount. That means the system can be attached to existing Nerf weapons and even real firearms should you be so inclined, plus there's a corded pressure switch that you can affix to the trigger of any gun.

The AppTag Release Date & Price

Shipping for the Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster is estimated to begin in about 4-6 weeks. Currently, you can pre-order the AppTag for $59.99 via the official website.
At launch, the AppTag will include a handful of compatible apps and games, but the encouraging news is that Hex3 is also releasing an SDK so that developers can create their own apps for use with the included gun holster. The AppTag gun holster that is included in the bundle is outfitted with four buttons, a trigger and a reload switch.
It shouldn’t be too long before you’re running and gunning in the wild. Forget those pesky darts that always seem to get lost. The AppTag seems like an awesome way to experience augmented reality in the real world. Plus, the option to shoot your friends doesn’t hurt either. We all have our moments.
